Dr Bernadette Abela-Ridder
Dr Bernadette Abela-Ridder works in the Department for the Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) of the World Health Organization (WHO) as the lead on neglected zoonotic diseases and NTDs that have a human animal interface. She is closely involved in advancing common areas of work with FAO, OIE and other global health actors. Since July 2021, Bernadette is supporting WHO’s new One Health Initiative.
Bernadette previously worked in the WHO Department of Food Safety and Zoonoses working on capacity building and global early warning for zoonotic events and led the WHO global burden of leptospirosis study.
Bernadette is a veterinary epidemiologist by training and previously worked for the US Food and Drug Administration on antimicrobial resistance, for l’Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD) in Cameroon on emergence of simian immunodeficiency viruses from non-human primates including bushmeat, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the U.N. on veterinary public health, and in clinical veterinary practice.

Dr. Reeta S. Mani
Dr. Reeta S. Mani is Additional Professor of Neurovirology, and Head of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference & Research in Rabies, National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore. Her areas of interest include viral infections of the brain, respiratory infections and molecular diagnostic methods. Her major focus of work has been in the field of Rabies-including clinical, diagnostic and preventive aspects. She has more than 60 scientific publications including papers and book chapters and has delivered more than 100 lectures/talks in national/international deliberations.

Dr. Amy T. Gilbert
Dr. Amy T. Gilbert is a research scientist at the United States Department of Agriculture. Her studies focus on the ecology and spillover of wildlife rabies, as well as the development of applied tools and methods to support oral vaccination programs for wildlife rabies prevention and control.

Daniel Streicker
Daniel is a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health and Comparative Medicine and the MRC Centre for Virus Research at the University of Glasgow. His work applies field studies, phylogenetics, and computational modelling to understand rabies transmission between species. He is currently exploring how outbreak forecasting and self-disseminating vaccines may improve the control of vampire bat rabies.

Prof. Thiravat Hemachudha
Prof. Thiravat Hemachudha, MD, FACP is a Professor of Neurology, Department of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University specialising in clinical, virological, and immunological studies, and serves on the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Rabies. He is a Fellow of American College of Physicians, and member of American Neurological Association. He established WHO-CC on Rabies Pathogenesis and Prevention at Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute, and the Neuroscience Centre for Research and Development under the Thai Red Cross Society in 2000 researching autoimmune molecular diagnostics and encephalitis. He is also the Director of Thai Red Cross Emerging Infectious Diseases Health Science Centre, a WHO-CC for Research and Training on Viral Zoonoses, which conducts wildlife surveillance, provides technical expertise to neighbouring countries, increasing preparedness, and improving diagnostics for novel pathogens.

Pasin Hemachudha
Pasin Hemachudha, MD, is a Neurology resident at the Department of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University. He finished MBBS Medicine with Distinction from Barts and The London, School of Medicine and Dentistry, UK, in 2017 and worked as Junior Doctor in the UK till July 2018. He has a special interest in emerging infectious diseases, autoimmune diseases, encephalitis and public health. He completed the National Training on Laboratory Diagnosis of Viral Zoonotic Diseases at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, with a focus on Rabies epidemiology, neuropathology, diagnosis and vaccination. Siriporn Ghai
Siriporn Ghai is a Researcher and an International Project Coordinator at the Thai Red Cross Emerging Infectious Diseases Health Science Centre specialising in virological studies. She graduated with honours in Masters of Neuroscience from the University of Manchester, UK, in 2012. She has an interest in increasing outbreak preparedness and improving diagnostics for novel pathogens. Felipe Rocha
Veterinary and master in epidemiology by the University of São Paulo, Brazil, with seven years of professional experience as a technical consultant in zoonoses and in technical cooperation for the Pan American Center for Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Veterinary Public Health, of the Pan American Health Organization / World Organization of Health. Presentation title: “Structure of the Regional Program of the Americas for the Control of Rabies in Livestock and Domestic Herbivores.”

Dr Karoon Chanachai
Dr Karoon Chanachai is now working as Regional Animal Health Advisor at USAID Regional Development Mission for Asia, Bangkok, Thailand. Prior working for USAID beginning in Mid of 2020, he worked at the Department of Livestock Development, Thailand as veterinary epidemiologist and initiated Oral Rabies Vaccination Project in Thailand. At present he is also serving as technical committee of Oral Rabies Vaccination Project led by the Department. He has more than 20 years experience on animal rabies control and prevention both at the field and administrative level.

Dr Florence Cliquet
Dr Florence Cliquet is an immunologist and she has been working since April 1992 onwards in ANSES (French agency for food, environmental and occupational health safety, France) as Head of Unit for Rabies, Director of the Nancy Laboratory for Rabies and Wildlife and rabies senior expert.
She has been responsible for managing all rabies research and technical projects of the Laboratory. The unit operates as EU reference laboratory for Rabies, EU reference laboratory for rabies serology, OIE reference laboratory for rabies, WHO collaborating centre for research and management in zoonoses control.
She is providing scientific and technical support in animal rabies epidemiology for the French Ministry of Agriculture. She is also providing expertise for animal rabies to international bodies (European Commission, WHO, OIE, EFSA, European Pharmacopoeia) and their Member States. Florence Cliquet is currently involved part in several European research projects for rabies control, particularly in the Western Balkan countries (in progress) and two OIE Twinnings with Taiwan and with Tunisia (both Twinnings in progress).

Prof. Wanda Markotter
Is the Director of the Centre for Viral Zoonoses, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Pretoria. She occupies two research chairs; DSI-NRF South African Research Chair in "Infectious Diseases of Animals " (Zoonoses) and a chair in People, Health and Places at the Future Africa Institute. In 2021 she was appointed as the co-chair of the One Health High Level expert panel (OHHLEP) advising the WHO, OIE, FAO and UNEP. Her interdisciplinary research programme focusing on bat pathogens and the risk of spill over in southern Africa, is supported by several multi-collaborative international viral surveillance programmes. Part of this programme include epidemiology and pathogenicity of rabies and rabies-related lyssaviruses with a focus on the African continent.

Janine Seetahal
Janine Seetahal is a veterinarian from Trinidad and Tobago, with a passion for rabies and bats. She is involved in various aspects of rabies prevention and control in the Caribbean and is actively involved in bat conservation as a Director in the Trinidad and Tobago Bat Conservation and Research Unit (aka Trinibats) and the Trinidad and Tobago representative within the Latin American and Caribbean Bat Conservation Network (RELCOM). She also promotes rabies awareness through her work with the Rabies Subgroup under the Veterinary Public Health Working Group of the Caribbean Animal Health (CaribVET) Network and the Bat Rabies Education Team of the One Health Commission. In addition to Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Seetahal has a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Molecular Genetics from the University of the West Indies. Her postgraduate research included the molecular epidemiology of Trinidad rabies viruses; mainland to island movement and potential prey of the Desmodus rotundus vampire bat; and viruses harbored by neotropical bats. Janine is also a previous recipient of the George Baer Latin American Investigator Award.

Prof. Sarah Cleaveland
Prof. Sarah Cleaveland graduated as a zoologist and veterinarian and, in 1996, completed her PhD at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine on the epidemiology of rabies in the Serengeti ecosystem, Tanzania. Prof. Cleaveland is currently based at the University of Glasgow, UK, leading a programme of One Health research with partners in East Africa. This work addresses a range of disease problems, including rabies, which affect human, animal and ecosystem health, and focuses on questions relating to disease burden and impact, reservoir dynamics, surveillance, and the design of interventions for disease control and elimination. Prof. Cleaveland has been involved in several graduate training and capacity-strengthening initiatives with African partner institutions, including the Afrique One-ASPIRE consortium and the Zoonoses and Emerging Livestock Systems initiative. She has contributed to the WHO Expert Consultation on Rabies, has been a member of the WHO Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on Neglected Tropical Diseases and is now a member of the International Commission for the Certification of Dracunculiasis Eradication. Prof. Cleaveland was a founding director of the Alliance for Rabies Control, is a Fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the US National Academy of Medicine.

Clayton B. Gitti

Ashley Banyard
During his career Dr Banyard has worked with numerous pathogens of significance to both humans and animals, all of which have been exotic to the UK and thus have required work in high containment. His early work with the morbillivirus focussed on detection, characterisation and vaccine development for morbilliviruses. He has published over 30 peer reviewed manuscripts and book chapters on various elements of morbillivirus virology. His career then shifted to work with rabies and the lyssaviruses, assessing pathogenicity, characterising new pathogens and developing novel vaccine formulations for divergent lyssaviruses for which no vaccines currently exist. He has published over 80 peer reviewed manuscripts and book chapters in the lyssavirus field and is recognised internationally as an expert in both morbilliviruses and lyssaviruses. During his career he has travelled to over 51 different countries to date presenting and discussing the work of his teams. Most recently he has moved into the role as Head of Research on Influenza and Newcastle disease virus where he leads several research teams undertaking cutting edge research into these pathogens. He is also the Deputy Director for the OIE/FAO International reference laboratory for Avian Influenza and Newcastle disease virus at the Animal and Plant Health Agency.

Sergio Recuenco
Medical epidemiologist, graduated a physician in Peru, and Doctor of Public Health from State University of New York, working in rabies research focused in human rabies, rabies vaccines, and vampire bat rabies. During his career worked at the Peruvian Ministry of Health, the New York State Department of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-CDC, Atlanta: and the Peru National Institute of Health, he also supports the Pan American Health Organization as a rabies consultant. Currently works as an Associated Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima Peru. Dr. Recuenco has received several national and international awards; the most recent was the Rabies Hero Award-MSD in 2020.

Dr. Rodney Willoughby
Dr. Rodney Willoughby is a Professor of Pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin, specializing in Infectious Diseases. His research interests include human rabies, metabolomics of brain infections, gaseous intoxication by bacteria and, recently, host susceptibility to severe COVID disease and its later complications.

Prof. Hervé Bourhy
Prof. Hervé Bourhy graduated as a veterinarian and, in 1992, completed his PhD at the Paris Sorbonne University on the consequences of lyssavirus diversity on diagnosis, epidemiology and prophylaxis. He is also trained as a clinical biologist in human medicine (Ministry of Health). Prof. Hervé Bourhy is currently based at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, France. He heads the Global Health Department, the Lyssavirus, Epidemiology and Neuropathology Laboratory, the WHO Collaborating Center for Rabies Reference and Research and the National Reference Center for Rabies. He has contributed to many WHO Expert Consultation on Rabies and is a member of the WHO Rabies advisory panel. He has also provided expertise to other international bodies (ECDC and OIE). He is involved in many training and teaching activities (Master degrees with French Universities, MOOCs). He is coordinating the International Course on Rabies Control and Elimination co-organised with OIE, WHO, the University of Lausanne and the University of Glasgow and with the support of GARC (5 editions already completed). His research activities mainly aim to generate a paradigm shift in the way rabies is monitored, studied and controlled, bringing it into the era of One Health and Precision Public Health. His work focuses on questions relating to disease persistence and dispersion, reservoir dynamics (dogs, bats), crossing of the species barrier and modalities and physiopathological consequences of the neurotropism of viruses such as rabies virus and SARS-CoV-2 and development of new antiviral strategies against the rabies virus and SARS-CoV-2. These research activities are done in close collaboration with many partners and colleagues in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, including the Institut Pasteur International Network and are supported by national, European (ECDC) and international fundings. Noël Tordo got his PhD in Virology in 1988 (Paris VII). He is currently Head of the Unit Antiviral Strategies at the Institut Pasteur in Paris. He is also Head of the OIE Reference Laboratories on Rift Valley Fever and Crimean Congo Haemorrhagic Fever. Following the unprecedented Ebola Outbreak in Western Africa, he is present in Conakry since 2016 to built the “Institut Pasteur de Guinée”, the n°32 in the International “Pasteur Network”.
Noël Tordo is interested in both fundamental and translational aspects of emerging viral diseases, mainly zoonoses (rabies, viral haemorrhagic fevers…) analysed under a “One Health” approach. with worldwide collaborations. His main scientific contributions have concerned the molecular and cellular biology of (re)emerging virus: (1) the detection of the virus in the animal vector ; (2) the molecular interactions and potential co-evolution with its hosts ; (3) the mechanism that accompany the necessary dynamic allowing to jump across the species barrier, from animal to human ; (4) the development of future therapies, based on vaccines or antivirals.
Noël Tordo is strongly involved in knowledge transmission, Director of the course of Fundamental Virology at the Institut Pasteur for >20 years, Organiser of regular national or international conferences such as the « European Meeting on Viral Zoonosis » or the « European Congress of Virology – 2013- Lyon ». He is President of the « Société Française de Virologie » and expert in various scientific committees in France and abroad. He has got awards for the French Academies of Science and Medecine, from the Ministry of Education and Research and is a Member of the French Veterinary Academy.
Noël Tordo has published more than 160 articles / reviews, and participated to numerous Meetings and Conferences wolrdwide.
