The city of Armação dos Búzios (or Búzios, for short) is located 180 km east of the city of
Rio de Janeiro.

VISA
Citizens of some countries (including the US) will need a Brazilian entry
visa. The Geoanalysis 2012 Secretariat will provide an invitation letter
for a registered participant upon request. The Brazilian Visa Policy is
based on diplomatic reciprocity, i.e., countries that require a visa from
Brazilian citizens are subject to the same formality for their citizens.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, citizens of the following
countries do not need visas (as of March 2010)*: Andorra, Argentina, Austria,
Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, Bolivia, Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, Costa
Rica, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, El Salvador, Finland,
France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Guyana, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland,
Ireland, Israel, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macau, Malaysia,
Monaco, Morocco, Namibia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Noruega, Panama, Paraguay,
Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia,
South Africa, South Korea, Sovereign Military Order of Malta, Spain, Suriname,
Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Turkey, United

conditions without previous warning. PLEASE CHECK with the nearest Brazilian

Health and Vaccination
It is essential to have health insurance in Brazil, as hospital and medical
fees are expensive.
For most regions of the country, including Búzios, you don't need to worry
about vaccinations.
A valid international vaccination certificate for yellow fever, under
the auspices of the World Health Organization, is demanded by the Brazilian
Government for travellers who are from (resident or have been in transit
within the past three months) Angola, Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cameron,
Colombia, Ecuador, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, French Guyana,
Liberia, Nigeria, Peru, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sierra Leone,
Sudan, Venezuela and Zaire. Please consult the health department office
in your city.
This vaccination is recommended for anyone who intends to visit the following
regions within Brazil:
North: states of Acre, Amazonas, Rondônia, Roraima, Amapá,
Pará and Tocantins.
Mid-West: states of Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul,
Goiás and Distrito Federal all municipalities in the states of Maranhão
and Minas Gerais municipalities located in the south of Piauí west and
south of Bahia north of Espírito Santo northwest of São Paulo west of
Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. The vaccination must be
taken at least 10 (ten) days before travelling.
Time zone
Rio de Janeiro and Búzios are located at time zone -3:00 GMT. There are
typically 4 hours less with respect to Western Europe and 2 hours more
with respect to U.S. East Time.
Electrical power
At Búzios and Rio de Janeiro the electrical power is 110 V, 60 Hz.
Tips and taxes
A 10% tip is usually already included in the bill at restaurants and bars.
You are not obliged to pay this tip, but usually nobody complains. Of
course you may leave a higher tip if you wish. If the tip is not included,
it will be explicitly indicated in the bill. Usually, all prices have
already included the Brazilian federal taxes. An exception could be the
hotel prices, which may add a 5% to 10% tax to the given rates.
