Founded in 1554 by the Jesuits, São Paulo, capital of the largest state in southeastern Brazil, is also the main financial and business center of Latin America. The most populous city in Brazil, the American continent and the entire southern hemisphere of the world, São Paulo is also considered the most influential Brazilian city in the global scenario. In addition, São Paulo is the cradle of the cultural scene of the country, with strong artistic development in its diverse expressions - music, theater, plastic arts, among others.

One of the main tourist destinations in Brazil, São Paulo attracts visitors with different purposes: leisure, events and mainly business. Among its natural, architectural and historical attractions, there are important monuments, parks and museums.

MUSEUMS

MUSEU DE ARTES DE SÃO PAULO

Inaugurated in October 1947 by Assis Chateaubriand, the São Paulo Museum of Art (Masp) is the result of an adventure of two people with a revolutionary vision for its time and supported by a group of friends.
Founder and owner of Diários e Emissoras Associados, along with professor Pietro Maria Bardi, journalist and art critic in Italy recently arrived in Brazil, Chateubriand created the most important collection in the Southern Hemisphere. The happy meeting between them aligned Brazil with the countries of first world in the universe of the arts.
The project that had been cultivated for decades was very successful after it opened, raising the necessary funds for the acquisition of works of art to form the collection of the museum.
Lina Bo, Italian modernist architect and wife of Professor Bardi, architecturally conceived the current Masp building. The Paulista Avenue land had been donated to the municipality on condition that the view to the downtown area, as well as to the Serra da Cantareira, be preserved. Thus, she devised a building supported by four pillars, thus allowing those who pass by the place to unveil the center of the city. In construction it is unique in the world with the main body perched on four lateral pillars with a free span of 74 meters.
Masp maintains a gallery, library, photo library, film library, video library, art courses and educational services to support exhibitions, films and musical concerts of artistic and cultural interest. In this way, it places itself as the first cultural center of excellence in our country.
The visitor can appreciate in the building of Avenida Paulista works of the Italian school including Rafael, Andrea Mantegna, Botticceli and Bellini; of Flemish painters like Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Cranach or Memling and Spaniards like Velazquéz and Goya.
Most of Masp's European art nucleus is French painting. We can appreciate the four portraits of the daughters of Louis XV, painted by Nattier, or the allegories of the four seasons of Delacroix. From the Impressionist movement, we find works by Renoir, Manet, Monet, Cézanne and Degas.
From the post-impressionists it is possible to see paintings by Van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec.
One of the highlights of the collection is the space dedicated to the complete collection of sculptures by Edgar Degas. In bronze and with 73 pieces, it can only be seen integrally in a few museums, such as Metropolitan, in New York, and in the D`Orsay Museum in Paris, as well as Masp.
The space was created to be dynamic, with a cultural center profile. Therefore, it has different spaces for holding temporary exhibitions. The visitor always finds something new in his visit to the place, however frequent it may be. The temporary exhibitions present the most varied themes or supports. National and international exhibitions of contemporary art, photography, design and architecture take place during the year, bringing to the public a universe of images.
Masp also presents musical projects, cinema and lectures. The two auditoriums designed by Lina are intended for these activities.

MUSEU DE ARTE CONTEMPORÂNEA

The Museum of Contemporary Art was created in 1963 when the University of São Paulo received the collection of the former MAM of São Paulo, formed by the collections of the couple of patrons Yolanda Penteado and Ciccillo Matarazzo, for the collections of works acquired or received in donation during the period of the old MAM and the prizes of the Biennials of São Paulo until 1961. In possession of this rich collection composed, among others, by works by Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Wassily Kandinsky, Tarsila do Amaral, Anita Malfatti, Emiliano Di Cavalcanti, Alfredo Volpi, Lygia Clark and a stupendous collection of Italian art from the beginning of the 20th century, the new museum now meets the main objectives of the University: the search for knowledge and its dissemination through society.
In its early years the MAC USP sought to preserve, study and display the collection, while at the same time becoming one of the main centers in the Southern Hemisphere to collect, study and display works related to the various aspects of conceptual art, new technologies and works that problematized the modern tradition. It was during this initial period that Lucio Fontana and Artur Barrio, among many others, entered the Museum collection. Aware of its role as a catalyst for new professionals in the areas of theory, history and art criticism, in addition to those connected to the universes of museology and museography, MAC USP has become recognized as an important center in all these areas, as well as those linked to education through art.
In the last decades, MAC USP has continued to expand its modern and contemporary collections. In this period, the works of Henry Moore, Cildo Meireles, Julio Plaza, Joseph Beuys, Leda Catunda, Rosângela Rennó, Jonathas de Andrade and several other Brazilian and international artists entered the collection. More recently, with an update policy, the Museum has received more than 300 works from donations of artists, galleries, collectors and acquisitions through AAMAC (Association of Friends of MAC USP).
Installed in an architectural complex created in the 1950s by the architect Oscar Niemeyer and team, MAC USP has a collection of about 10 thousand works, including paintings, engravings, three-dimensional photographs, conceptual art, objects and installations. It is considered a center of reference of modern and contemporary art, Brazilian and international, keeping a library and an important documentary archive available to students, specialists and the general public.

MUSEU DO IPIRANGA

The idea of erecting a monument in honor of Brazil's independence at the site of the proclamation, on the banks of the Ipiranga River, appeared months later. However, for lack of funds and understandings as to the type to be created, only after 68 years of the proclamation that the idea was fulfilled with the inauguration of the monument-building, in 1890. To such, in 1884 was contracted like architect the engineer italian Tommaso Gaudenzio Bezzi.
The architectural style adopted, eclectic, was long underway in Europe and would mark, from the late nineteenth century, the architectural transformation of São Paulo. Bezzi used, in simplified form, the model of Renaissance palace.
Currently the museum is one of the icons of the city and its importance is marked both by the grandeur of the building and its facilities as by the great part of the history of Brazil that it covers. It has a collection of more than 125 thousand pieces, including furniture, costumes and utensils that belonged to figures from Brazilian history, such as bandeirantes, emperors and barons from the state of São Paulo.
There are also collections of white arms, pieces of the Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932 and a room reserved for Santos Dumont, pioneer of aviation, with models of his apparatuses and objects of personal use. In addition, the museum's facilities include a library with 100,000 volumes, a Historical Documentation Center with 40,000 manuscripts and laboratories for the preservation and restoration of pieces and documents. Around the building, a large and beautiful garden is used as a nook for the romantics, used for the exercises of those who enjoy gymnastics or for children's recreation. The space also promotes courses, seminars and other events, as well as providing services to the community, attending institutions, researchers, teachers, students and the general public and also provides advice and advice, as well as distribute publications of the institution.
A sign of the love of the paulistano towards the area is the interference and measure of protection to the museum. Founded on September 1, 1995, Sociedade Friends do Museu Paulista (Sampa) is a non-profit civil society organization dedicated to promoting the development and improvement of the São Paulo University's Paulista Museum activities, as well as contributing to the areas research, publications, curatorship and public service. The extension of actions with the population is one of its main goals.

Pina_Luz
The São Paulo Pinacoteca is a museum of visual arts with an emphasis on Brazilian production from the nineteenth century to the present day. Founded in 1905 by the Government of the State of São Paulo, it is the oldest art museum in the city.
It was installed in the old building of the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios, designed at the end of the 19th century by the architect Ramos de Azevedo's office, which later underwent an extensive renovation with a project by the architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha in the late 1990s.
The original collection of the Pinacoteca was formed with the transfer of 20 works of the Paulista Museum of the University of São Paulo from important artists of the city such as Almeida Júnior, Pedro Alexandrino, Antônio Parreiras and Oscar Pereira da Silva. Over the years it has formed a significant collection, with almost 10 thousand works.
Since 2006 the Pinacoteca is administered by the Art and Culture Pinacoteca Association (link to APAC). It currently holds about 30 exhibitions and receives approximately 500 thousand visitors per year.

MUSEU DO FUTEBOL

The cultural capital of Latin America once again innovates and opens the only museum in the world focused exclusively on football without being connected to any specific club. The multimedia collection, the futuristic aspect of the installations and references to the great facts of the Brazilian history of the XX century are guarantees of a great ride even for the less fanatical by the modality. With an investment of R $ 32.5 million, the Football Museum is one of the great tourist attractions of the city.
The project covers an area of 6,900 m² under the bleachers of the Paulo Machado de Carvalho - Pacaembu Municipal Stadium. Its architecture stands out for integrating the spaces: the ceiling is the own bleachers, a catwalk connects the east and west sides of the building and allows a beautiful view of Charles Miller Square.
Three axes guide the museum's journey: Emotion, History and Fun. The visitor begins the route in the entrance hall, called the Hall of the Fan, where are gathered objects used by fans like key chains, ashtrays, streamers, brooches and flags.
After twisting it's time to feel among the idols. The person circulates between large hanging panels of the Baroque Angels Room, in which the moving images of performers such as Pele, Falcon, Zico, Bebeto, Didi, Romario, Ronaldo, Gilmar, Gérson, Socrates and Rivelino are displayed.
Personalities like Zagalo, Armando Nogueira, Galvão Bueno, Juca Kfouri, Arnaldo César Coelho, Daniel Piza, João Gordo, Marcelo Tas and Ruy Castro narrated their favorite goals. Their voices can be heard in the Hall of Goals. Original recordings by Ary Barroso, Fiori Gigliotti, Oduvaldo Cozzi, Waldir Amaral, Jorge Cury and Osmar Santos are available in the Radio Room.
On the "History" axis, the Room of Origins shows the importance of ethnic fusion in our football with photos and a video. In the Hall of Heroes are presented Brazilian personalities that marked the century, among them players like Leônidas da Silva and Ademir da Guia. Inside a closed tunnel the visitor experiences the sensation of the "rite of passage, the canopy of 50". Gigantic cups made up of frames and liquid crystal displays show the main characteristics of the country in the periods between the World Cups. The Experience Room Pelé and Garrincha are a tribute to the stars who never lost a game playing together.
In the "Fun" axis, the visitor knows the Room of Numbers and Curiosities, a great interactive almanac, and the Dance of Soccer, in which you can listen to chronicles about elements such as dribbling and goal. The Body Game Room provides a very fun experience, since the visitor can hit a penalty kick and know the speed of their kick.
The tour ends at Sala Pacaembu, which celebrates this one of the oldest stadiums in the country.
The Football Museum still offers free baby strollers for the ride, all this for the fanaticism to the sport to be neither size nor no age!

MORAIS REI DO FILET

The King of Filet, is confused with the history of Gastronomy Paulistana, being today one of the most traditional restaurants in São Paulo.
It all started in 1914, when Salvador Domingos Vidal, who had died, set up a restaurant on Rua Conselheiro Crispiniano, whose name at the time was Esplanadinha.
It became a point of reference at night, where the clientele was composed of Bohemians, who left Avenue's Dancing, artists, politicians and the high society that flocked to the Municipal Theater, all in search of the already famous Filet do ... So good in this time, how much now ...
In 1914 he migrated to the Júlio Mesquita 175 square, where he remains until today ...

ÁVILA

Barbecue (grill) Argentine style, with its leaning grill. One of the hallmarks of the house is the "asador criollo", typical of the interior of Argentina, similar to the brazilian ground fire, in which the meat on the skewer slowly roasts beside the embers - which allows to accentuate the flavor and diminish the fat. As in Argentina, the "asador" is in sight of the people that pass by the entrance of the restaurant. Commanded by the friendly owner-owner Guillermo (you can speak on my behalf) who is always ready to indicate the best cuts of the day. It has a beautiful enoteca upstairs.

ESTAÇÃO DA LUZ

Opened to the public on March 1, 1901, Estação da Luz occupies 7,500 m² of Jardim da Luz, home to the structures brought from England that copy Big Ben and Westminster abbey. There was no inauguration, as traffic was gradually being moved, but it was not long before the new landmark of the city was considered a visiting room in São Paulo. All the illustrious personalities who had the capital as destination were obliged to disembark in the place. Entrepreneurs, intellectuals, politicians, diplomats and kings were welcomed in their lobby and passed by when they said goodbye.
The station has also become a gateway for immigrants, promoting the small town of tropeiros to an important metropolis. This importance, granted to the São Paulo Railway Station, as it was officially known, lasted until the end of World War II. After this period, rail was replaced by airplanes, buses and cars, much faster than trains.
In 1946, the building of the Light was partially destroyed by a fire. The reconstruction of the station was decided by the government and extended until 1951, when it was reinaugurada. It has undergone further renovations and restorations. Already in 1982 the architectural complex of Estação da Luz was registered by the Council for the Defense of Historic, Artistic, Archaeological and Tourist Heritage (Condephaat).

MEMORIAL DA AMÉRICA LATINA

Inaugurated on March 18, 1989 in Barra Funda, the Memorial of Latin America was created to disseminate Latin American expressions of creativity and knowledge, always with the goal of interacting cultural, political, economic and social relations.
In an area of 84,480 m², the architect Oscar Niemeyer designed the space on top of a cultural project developed by the Brazilian sociologist Darcy Ribeiro, who has always defended the integration of Latin America.
The space is divided into environments such as the Civic Square, an open space where one of the greatest symbols of the Memorial, the sculpture "The Great Hand", symbolizes the blood spilled by the Latin American peoples in the struggle for freedom; the Salão de Atos Tiradentes, with six panels that tell the saga of Latin American colonization; the Simon Bolivar Auditorium, famous for having already received heads of state such as Bill Clinton, Fidel Castro and Hugo Chávez, among others; the Latin American Library, with the largest collection specialized in Latin American culture, with about 30 thousand volumes; the Darcy Ribeiro Pavilion of Popular Creativity, in which there is a model with almost a thousand small pieces, created by the artists Gepp and Maia, with the main tourist attractions of the Latin American countries and scenes like one of the book of Ernest Hemingway written in Cuba, The old and the sea". The pavilion also houses a permanent exhibition of Latin American folk art.
On the site there is also the Congressmen's Annex, a space dedicated to academic, diplomatic and small-scale exhibitions, and the Marta Traba Gallery of Latin American Art, inaugurated in 1998 and also designed by Oscar Niemeyer, in an area that originally served as a specialized restaurant in Latin American gastronomy.
In addition to all these environments, the Memorial stands out as one of the main tourist attractions of the city by the great names it has received until today, such as Luciano Pavarotti and the Balé de Cuba. Also it was for years the headquarters of the Symphony Orchestra of the State of São Paulo. There was born the project of the University of Music and the Jazz Symphonic Orchestra.
The Memorial hosts groups for free and monitored visits. The space has a large outdoor area, but the lack of trees leaves you with the arid climate.
